  • Toyota RAV4 Prime
  • Toyota Venza
  • Toyota Highlander
  • Toyota Highlander Hybrid
  • Toyota Sequoia
  • Toyota Land Cruiser
  • Toyota Tacoma
  • Toyota Tundra
  • Toyota Prius
  • Toyota Camry
  • Toyota Avalon
  • Toyota Sienna
  • Toyota RAV4
  • Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

How Do Toyota AWD Vehicles Work?

Toyota all-wheel drive vehicles use four different types of unique all-wheel drive systems to give you maximum control on the La Grange, MO roads. They all use sensors and computers to monitor the conditions of the road and decide when power needs to be distributed. The difference between these four systems is how they apply different levels of power. Learn more below:

Dynamic Torque-Control AWD

  • Uses electromagnetic coupling to engage and disengage the AWD system.
  • Applies slight braking when it’s detected that a tire is slipping.
  • Equalizes traction on all wheels and helps preserve forward momentum.
  • Driveshaft powering the AWD system is always on even when the electromagnetic coupling system isn’t engaged.
  • Available on: Toyota Avalon XLE, Avalon XLE Limited, Toyota Camry LE, Camry SE, Camry XLE, and Camry XSE; Toyota RAV4 LE, RAV4 XLE, and RAV4 XLE Premium.

Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Driveline Disconnect

  • Uses multiple dog-clutch gears to engage the AWD system behind the rear transmission, ahead of the rear differential, and the rear tires.
  • The AWD system distributes power to each wheel through the dog-clutches instead of using selective braking.
  • Disengages the dog-clutch to a wheel when it senses that wheel slipping and then applies power to the other wheels in order to preserve momentum.
  • Driveshaft disengages when AWD is not in use so that the driveshaft won’t turn continuously.
  • Available On: Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road, RAV4 Adventure, and RAV4 Limited, Toyota Highlander Limited, and Highlander Platinum.

Electronic On-Demand AWD

  • Uses electric motor generators for the rear wheels in place of driveshafts.
  • Rear wheel motors turn off when additional traction isn’t needed.
  • When additional traction is needed, rear tire motors switch on and distribute power to each tire as needed.
  • Available on: Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid.

AWDe

  • Works the same as electronic on-demand AWD except the rear motors are induction motors and are only available at 43 mph and lower.
  • AWDe is engaged from up to 6mph while accelerating.
  • If traction is needed above 6mph, then the system stays engaged up until 43 mph. AWD disengages if traction isn’t needed.
  • Available on: Toyota Prius.

Four-Wheel Drive vs. Toyota All-Wheel Drive

If you need even more capability and control on the Quincy roads, then four-wheel drive (4WD) may come in handy as it offers more capability than AWD. However, 4WD will cause your vehicle to move slower than it would if it was in AWD. The following Toyota vehicles have 4WD:

  • Toyota Tacoma
  • Toyota Tundra
  • Toyota Land Cruiser
  • Toyota 4Runner
  • Toyota Sequoia
